Who is L. Denise?

of all the nicknames I have ever had in my life, I never imagined that I am and many people in my life would ever call me by the moniker, "L. Denise Mayes." I always thought it was fascinating that people like to be referred to something other than their first name for a variety of reasons. for me, it would be my first name La'Tasha and its derivation - Tasha or Tash.

I was inspired by a colleague, L. Jared Boyd, from the Coro Civic Center for Civic Leadership's Fellow's Program in Public Affairs (FPPA) Class of 2003-2004 in Pittsburgh. I think I told him, "I should just call myself, L. Denise." they say emulation is the best form of flattery.

to be clear, I have a good ole American Negro name, La'Tasha Denise Mayes and I am proud of it. L. Denise Mayes and L. Denise have just become ways to name my personas that allow me to navigate my world one day at a time.

welcome to the the life and times of L. Denise Mayes.

Macaroni & Cheese and BFF's

so my best friend just showed me a new side of her by really hesitating to share her macaroni & cheese with me.

now I love this particular best friend to the edges of the Universe, but she really wasn't tryna give me none of her macaroni & cheese. this - after she just finished guessing what my favorite thing to do is of all time and that as many of you know is to EAT!

she even made the comment that I get really quiet when I eat. in fact, I am savoring every moment of it especially if it my favorite or just really good. I am just writing this post to let her know that I ain't mad at her and if I had macaroni & cheese from Mother in Philly or the way they toast it to cheesy perfection at Kelly's in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh, I wouldn't share either.

and she had the nerve to call the fact that I just dropped an "organic locally-farmed" blueberry into my red wine "gross". it's been a rough week, BFF, can a sistah get a break?!

to atone, she did share some of her macaroni & cheese out of the box with a sprig of parsley. ;-D

peace and blessings,
L. Denise
